Just as a diverse diet provides vitamins and minerals, a complete exercise program should consist of varied activities to work every part of your body – in other words, cross-training. Cross-training means that you incorporate a variety of activities into your exercise routine. It’s a way to broaden your activities and work different muscles. Cross-training can be as simple as swapping an activity. For example, you may swim one day and run the next. Or, it can combine several types of exercises in one workout session.

Whole body vibration is a great option for cross training. There are many benefits and it is a fast, effective alternative to resistance training that enhances muscular strength and power in both sedentary and athletic populations. Because of the low-impact nature of the exercise and the relatively low exertion required make whole body vibration an attractive exercise mode when working with obese and elderly clients. Additionally, it can be a good cross-training option for athletes wishing to minimize the amount of repetitive joint loading on their bodies.

Whole-body vibration training has been shown to increase muscular strength, explosive power and anabolic hormone levels when performed for as little as 4 minutes three times a week (Bosco et al. 2000; Torvinen et al. 2002). It requires relatively little exertion compared with traditional forms of exercise; yet studies comparing this training method to traditional strength training have found similar gains in strength and, in some cases, more gains in explosive power (Delecluse, Roelants & Verschueren 2003; Roelants et al. 2004).

Benefits of Cross Training

· Reduces exercise boredom

· Allows you to be flexible about you training needs and plans

· Produces a higher level of all around conditioning

· Conditions the entire body, not just specific muscle groups

· Reduces the risk of injury

· Work some muscles while others rest and recover

· Can continue to train while injured

· Improves your skill, agility and balance

It is always recommended that an individual should consult with their family physician who understands their medical history before embarking on any new exercise or rehabilitation protocol. Exercise can strengthen the cardiovascular system, bones, muscles, joints, reduce body fat and improve flexibility, balance and coordination. But if you want to see all of these benefits, you’ll need to start cross training. What better time to start than now with whole body vibration?

The PowerVibe Motion 1 is an example of a quality, pivotal (or oscillating) whole body vibration product. There are 2 main types of WBV – vertical (also called vertical tri-planar or lineal), and pivotal (also called oscillating or teeter-totter). While both offer a number of the same general benefits, such as increased circulation and muscle activation, pivotal may be especially helpful in offering these additional benefits:

General Benefits of All Quality WBV Products:

- Helpful for warm up

- Improved flexibility

- Assist in post-workout lactic acid flush

- Improved lymphatic drainage

- Reduction in cortisol

- Can assist in increasing bone mineral density (BMD)

- Helps to balances hormones

- Releases endorphins

Benefits Specific to Pivotal WBV Products:

- Can improve mobility quickly (in relative terms) for seniors and/or deconditioned subjects

- Can reduce low back pain via mobilization of the lumbar/SIJ regions

- Can be effective in the rehab of total hip and knee replacement

- Reduces the transfer of vibration to the head

- Can help deconditioned subjects improve fitness quickly

- Great for core activation and core strengthening

- Great for increasing lower body strength for those sports dependent on lower body (Ex: skiing, snowboarding, cycling)

- Great for increasing explosive power (for sports specific training)

- Assists in weight loss, both through reduction of cortisol and mobilization of subcutaneous fat

- Increases secretion of hGH, which plays an important role in lipolysis, or breakdown of fat cells, thereby aiding the breakdown of cellulite.

- NOTE: The breakthrough published study that shows a 4.1% increase in femoral head BMD among post-menopausal test subjects was performed on a pivotal machine

- NOTE: This same study also showed a 29% improvement in balance, even though test subjects were not performing balance-specific training

My Chiropractor recommended I try the Power Vibe Zen Pro machine in his office when I was having muscle aches, especially in the upper back. After a couple of months using the Power Vibe (two times a week), my back, as well as, legs and upper body felt strengthened and I felt increased energy. At this point, my husband and I decided to purchase a Power Vibe for our home. From the start, the Power Vibe Company has been extremely helpful and supportive. They made the purchase and delivery process easy and efficient. And I feel so grateful that they have consistently and generously offered guidance and help with what WBV programs would be suited to my needs.

Right now, at age 75, after about eight months, I am exercising with the PV machine about four times a week. Last Spring I wanted to loose some weight and went on a diet. In about three months I lost eighteen pounds, which was easier and more successful than previous tries and it seems less an effort now to maintain the loss. I think the Power Vibe definitely plays a role in the weight loss process. After an exercise session on the Power Vibe, I feel energized and, at the same time, feel relaxed and always enjoy the session. In addition to the Power Vibe, I practice Hatha Yoga three times a week and walk about a mile and a half four times a week. The Power Vibe has certainly made a difference to me in ways I can see and I’m sure in less obvious areas like bone density and circulation.

It has long been recognized that people who carry their excess weight around their middles — those who are apple-shaped instead of pear-shaped — have a higher risk for heart attacks and strokes. Abdominal fat may produce substances that contribute to inflammation throughout the body. This is linked to a higher risk of disease. And, fat that collects around or near internal organs seems to pose a greater health risk than that which is just beneath the skin.

Having excess belly fat puts you at higher risk of:

• Type 2 diabetes

• High blood pressure

• Coronary artery disease

• High cholesterol and triglycerides

• Many other health conditions

In general, you’re in risky territory if your waistline measures more than: 40 inches for a man or 35 inches for a woman.

Hitting the floor for a flat-ab routine may sound like a fix. Crunches and sit-ups will give you stronger core muscles. But, they won’t cause you to lose abdominal fat any faster. Instead, plan for a slow, steady and overall weight loss. About ½ to 2 pounds a week is a safe and realistic goal for most people.

The most successful approach includes:

Regular aerobic exercise and strength training

Nutritious foods in reasonable portions

A support system, such as family and friends

Did you know?…Whole Body Vibration has been shown to be effective at increasing lean body mass, which improves resting metabolic rate and increases caloric expenditure, resulting in lower levels of body fat when combined with a reduced-calorie diet. Whole body vibration enhanced exercise training improves the flow of blood and oxygen to the tissues which enhances cell metabolism function. It balances hormone levels like cortisol or insulin resistance.

With WBV training, you can get a full body workout in just 10 minutes a day, 3‐5 days a week.

Need a weight loss plan? Nutritionist Susanne Bennett shares her tips for a successful weight loss success! Susanne is a PowerVibe customer and uses the Zen Pro in her practice.

Susanne Bennett
“There are many different steps in planning your goal of weight loss…”

1. Keep goals short-term… lose one to two pounds a week.
2. Write down your goal… and be specific.

One pound equates to 3,500 calories a day. To drop a pound in a week, cut out about 500 calories a day.

Susanne Bennett
“What is one pound of fat? It’s actually 3,500 calories. That means 35 divided by 7 — which is seven days a week — means 500-calories you’ve got to reduce a day. 500 calories would be… let’s say… a soda pop. Replace it with purified water and you start hydrating your cells with water. You’re going to lose weight.”

If you’re looking into supplements, Susanne recommends a soluble fiber formula, taken about 15-minutes before the largest meal, to fill you up and cut down on your absorption of calories.

She also recommends green tea with EGCG.

Susanne Bennett
“What is does is increases your metabolism. Our cells will burn more calories because it will increase in the metabolic rate.”

Susanne wants you to remember that weight loss takes time.

Susanne Bennett
“I personally like it when you lose about five pounds a month which means if you want to lose 20-pounds that’s going to take 4-months Give yourself a break. Don’t be so hard on yourself.”

A study that took place over a few years has just been completed had results that shocked doctors globally. Research showed that vibration exercise was 4 times as effective (4 times the weight-loss) as traditional exercise for weight-loss. Further, the vibration group kept the weight off 6 months after stopping using the vibration machine. The “diet only” and the “diet and exercise” group, all gained the weight back and more.

What this shows is that Vibration Exercise is able to reset the body allowing you to keep the weight off. These results although shocking to most have been known by many around the world that have been using vibration fitness for years. This group not only consists of everyday people but of many of the world’s best athletes in the NFL, NBA, Olympics and many of the celebrities in Hollywood.

The incredible stimulation of whole body vibration exercise delivers quick results. Oxygen rushes into cells, repair and regeneration quickly takes place and the body undergoes amazing rapid transformation. Maximum fat burning and weight loss can only be accomplished with proper nutrition, rest, and cardiovascular exercise in addition to strength and flexibility training with whole body vibration. Remember to gradually phase WBV into your life.

Whole Body Vibration has become widely popularized in the fitness and sports performance industry as well as hospitals, small private rehabilitation clinics, assisted living homes, corporate settings and even home gyms. Many spas and wellness centers are also adding whole body vibration to their offerings because of the many benefits it can provide. Here are a few examples of how it is being used.

Body Wrap:

Body wrapping is a proven technique for detoxification, inch loss, toning, and weight loss. Body wrapping draws out waste and excess toxins through the skin and therefore the benefits depend on good circulation in the skin. General guidelines for body wrapping require the client to remain active while wrapped in order to stimulate circulation. Whole body vibration has been shown to almost double blood circulation, especially in the upper layers of the skin, making it a perfect fit for a body wrap treatment. It does not require the large range of motion that would loosen the body wraps.

Improved fluid balance:

Although WBV does not burn major calories, it substantially improves fluid distribution and balance throughout the body. It is quite common to have immediate loss of weight which is very motivating.

Laser Lipo treatments:

Low power laser lipo is a body sculpting / weight loss technology that reduces fat by causing fat cells to release their contents into the surrounding tissue. The essential accompaniment to laser lipo treatment is stimulation of lymphatic circulation to help the body process the unwanted residue from the fat cells. Whole body vibration provides the perfect alternative to a manual lymphatic massage, and performs with consistency and precision so it is much more efficient than a manual massage.

Whole Body Vibration can supercharge every cell in your body with energy you never knew you had. Increased blood circulation sending oxygen throughout your body means healthier looking skin, less wrinkles, reduced swelling, and stronger joints.

People that are trying to lose weight are always concerned with their calorie intake and calorie burn. Calorie burn is impossible to measure completely accurately in any activity because there are so many variables.

To calculate aerobic calorie burn you need to consider the following information…age, weight, height, max/min heart rate, rate of oxygen intake, CO2 emissions, fitness level etc. There is no way to really test anaerobic calorie loss…only aerobic.

So what burns more calories, a vibration workout or cardio workout? Studies have shown calorie for calorie, cardio has a slight advantage. You can burn about 8 to 10 calories a minute hoisting weights, compared with 10 to 12 calories a minute running or cycling.

Vibration exercise is generally referred to as anaerobic exercise. Anaerobic exercise gives you a metabolic spike for an hour after a workout because your body is trying hard to help your muscles recover. That means you’ll burn an additional 25 percent of the calories you just scorched during your vibration session. For every 3 pounds of muscle you build, you can potentially burn an extra 120 calories a day. Vibration can be regarded as resistance training…resistance training burns fat…and calories

It has been calculated that a 10 min vibration session could yield an approximate 200-500 calorie burn. This could increase with intensifying the activity while on the machine. It has been calculated that 10 minutes on a vibration machine would be similar to approx a 3.5-6 mile walk. Keep in mind this depends on many variables.

Since muscles are working at almost 100% when using whole body vibration, they are burning more glucose and oxygen, therefore pushing the heart to pump harder and get more oxygen to the muscles. Since more fuel is being burnt it can help accelerate weight loss and increase muscle strength

Whole body vibration can be a great tool to help you lose weight. Recent studies have shown that acceleration training offers a 57% improvement in weight loss compared to conventional exercise and nutrition alone.

Vibration training is becoming more and more popular. When you incorporate the use of a whole body vibration machine into your regular health and fitness regimen, you can lose weight. Not only will you experience weight loss, but you will have a faster metabolism, tighter muscles, and a more attractive body. Whole body vibration machines also improve your flexibility, range of motion, and circulation.

When using a whole body vibration machine, your muscles can contract 20-50 times per second based on the Hertz setting of the machine. This contraction causes your body to work harder and burn more calories with basic exercises than you would normally doing floor exercises.

Whole Body vibration will help you build lean mass by performing exercises and various moves to target different regions throughout your body.

See the information below from a study funded by the Artesis University College of Antwerp, Belgium.

“In this study we demonstrated that adding aerobic exercise or whole body vibration (WBV) to a hypocaloric diet can help to maintain weight loss. Moreover, the addition of WBV seems to initiate an even larger loss of visceral adipose tissue (VAT). “

This study shows that combining whole body vibration training with caloric restriction can help to achieve a sustained long-term weight loss of 5–10%. This data shows that WBV training may have the potential to reduce VAT more than aerobic exercise in obese adults, possibly making it a meaningful addition to future weight loss programs.

Yoga means union of body and mind and you probably know what sets it apart from stretching or your physical exercise routine: the deep and distinct connection with your breath. Regular yoga practice has been shown to prevent middle-age spread in people of healthy weight and promote weight loss in those who are overweight.

Almost any position from a yoga or fitness class can be performed on a whole body vibration platform, and Yoga postures are usually held for a minute or two to allow time to focus on alignment.
For the Feet & Legs
- Feet evenly spaced, hip width apart with the outer edges parallel to the edge of the platform
- Even weight distribution through the ball of the foot and the heel
- Lifting the inner arches of the feet, while maintaining an evenness through the ankles
- Lifting the thighs above the kneecap
- Pushing out through the back of the legs
For the Lower Back
- Lifting out of the sacrum, lengthening the lower back
- Maintaining an even lumbar; stabilize by not over arching
- Tuck the tailbone under with navel to spine
For the Back, Neck & Shoulders
-Keep the shoulders down, away from your ears
-Evenness through the collarbones
-Lift the chest without throwing the ribcage forward

When all the muscle groups in the body are able to receive necessary stimulus, the effects of stress may be reduced. When using a vibration platform, endorphins can be released into the blood stream which may promote a sense of well being, enhancing the perceived quality of life. Vibration training may yield an increase in key hormones like serotonin that counter mental lethargy and show true enhancement in overall mood while sharpening the ability to focus and concentrate. Some people have reported an increase in a feeling of optimism, which has lead to the conclusion that the stimulating effects of the vibration machine may help counteract certain types of depression and loss of motivation.
