American Council on Exercise (ACE) EXPANDS PARTNERSHIP WITH INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL ON ACTIVE AGING (icaa)

Fitness Industry Leader and ICAA Co-Brand Curriculum for Older-Adult Communities

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (December 6, 2010)—The American Council on Exercise (ACE), America’s leading authority on fitness and the largest nonprofit fitness certification, education and training organization in the world, today announced that it has collaborated with the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA), an association that leads, connects and defines the active-aging industry, to offer professional development for staff members who provide fitness and wellness programs in senior living and community-based senior centers throughout the country . As an extension of the existing partnership between ACE and the ICAA formed in March of 2009 the dedicated education tracks are designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of rehabilitation, nursing, recreation and fitness professionals who provide fitness and wellness programs to mature adults. The initiative was unveiled this week at the International Council on Active Aging Conference 2010.

“We are thrilled to see a growing interest in fitness and physical activity at older-adult facilities,” said Scott Goudeseune, ACE president and CEO. “As a result of the growing awareness in understanding the critical nature of physical activity for this population, we are pleased to be able to enhance our partnership with the ICAA by co-creating specific professional development tracks to help advance the knowledge, skills and abilities of individuals working in these environments and provide safe and effective programming for the 50+ population.”

In developing this important programming, ACE drew from its decades of knowledge and research in the fitness arena and leveraged data gathered by ACE and ICAA representatives after interviewing leading employers representing a cross-section of senior living communities and community-based senior centers. These efforts quantified their professional development needs, as well as the resources necessary to enhance the delivery of fitness and wellness programs for residents and participants.

“By expanding our partnership with ACE through this co-branded curriculum, we are empowering older adults to improve their quality of life,” said Colin Milner, executive director of the ICAA. “We know that this demographic is seeking safe, relevant and effective fitness-based programming, and it is our goal to offer the highest quality educational tools available to ensure that they receive it. Given that the individuals delivering training at these centers come from variety of backgrounds, these tracks strengthen their expertise while providing them with specific lessons and guidelines to follow.”

The new education tracks are available from both organizations online at www.acefitness.org and www.icaa.cc beginning December 5th, 2010.

Being in the midst of a national health care crisis has many people worried about what is in store for their future medical needs. Paying too much while getting too little attention or care from their primary care doctors has become common. Many people are searching for Naturopathic doctors (NDs) to bridge the widening gap in their health care.

Naturopathic doctors have been around for decades, but most people are unfamiliar with their training and expertise. Naturopathy, or naturopathic medicine, is based on six principles.

Let nature heal

Identify and treat causes

First, do no harm

Educate patients

Treat the whole person

Prevent illness

A licensed naturopathic doctor is a primary care physician who is trained as an expert in natural medicine while also being able to function in the same capacity as a general family medical doctor. Typically they start with the least invasive treatment and get to the “root cause” of illness instead of just controlling symptoms. This is the biggest difference between an ND and MD. Naturopathic Doctors promote the healing power of nature, focusing on health rather than disease, and use natural therapies that are gentle, non-toxic and non-invasive.

Currently, only 15 states license Naturopathic doctors. When choosing a natural practitioner keep in mind that, because of the current lack of licensure, anyone can advertise themselves as a naturopathic doctor. It is important that the patient seeks out a qualified professional.

Chiropractors are the founders of holistic health. For years, the chiropractic community has focused on healing the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. For chiropractors diagnosing ailments and treating pain is more than just telling someone to take a pill. DC’s understand that true health and wellness has to do with complete healthy living from head to toe, inside and out.

WBV has nothing to do with pharmaceutical pills or chemicals. It’s about simple concepts such as increasing circulation and oxygenation throughout the entire body. Waking up cells, tissues, and muscles that haven’t been active in years is at the heart of why WBV works. Increasing amount of interest is directed to whole body vibration technology as studies indicate promising results. Numerous findings include increase in muscle strength, enhancing balance and co-ordination, improved flexibility, increase in bone mass density therefore decreasing osteoporosis, stimulating the lymphatic system, massage effect on muscles and providing low joint impact.

Research has shown vibration to increase range of motion beyond that of static stretching alone. The underlying means with whole body vibration is thought to be the elicitation of muscular activity via stretch reflexes. At increased intensity, there seems to be effects similar to those of massage such as increased blood flow and heat and furthermore there is a release of hormone response comparable to that found after resistance type exercise. The many positive aspects of whole body vibration on the neuromusculoskeletal system make it very beneficial when implemented as part of a chiropractic treatment. Overall whole body vibration can make it easier to administer the spinal manipulative treatments because the muscles are more relaxed. The need to apply soft tissue therapy can be decreased.

Our society is one that is fast-paced, information packed, and non-stop. People want to live healthier, but few actually do. Why? There isn’t enough time and solutions often seem too difficult. Our times are characterized by people needing to be told what to do, and to be shown a reasonable solution. With WBV, if you can get a patient to compromise for 10 minutes a day, 3-4 days a week, they will experience measurable positive benefits.

These findings should make every chiropractor excited to inquire further into this technology. The findings seem ideal to include with the chiropractic treatment.

Staying active is the fountain of youth. Many have discovered that it is the secret to feeling better and living longer. Finding a program that works for you and sticking with it is very important. Regular exercise can prevent or delay diabetes and heart trouble. It can also reduce arthritis pain, anxiety and depression. It can help older people stay independent.

There are four main types of exercise that are recommended for seniors:

Endurance activities – Activities like walking, swimming, or riding a bike build stamina and improve the health of the heart and circulatory system. Studies have prompted the American Heart Association to also recommend resistance training as a way to reduce risk of heart disease and as therapy for patients in cardiac rehabilitation programs.

Strengthening exercises –Activities to build muscle tissue and reduce age-related muscle loss. Strengthening exercises increase the strength of your muscles, maintain and build bones, improves your balance, coordination and mobility. The health benefits far outweigh the risk of injury, a concern that prevents many elderly people from adding more physical activity to their lives. Strength training can also have a great effect on reducing falls, the number one cause of death in the elderly.

Stretching exercises - Activities to keep the body flexible. Muscles trained through vibration exercise not only get stronger but also improve flexibility and mobility. When you stretch, the muscle tissues warm up and increase blood circulation and flexibility. When your muscles receive highly oxygenated blood, the time required to obtain a certain level of flexibility is dramatically decreased.

Balance exercises- Activities to reduce the chances of a fall. As people age, poor balance and flexibility contribute to falls and broken bones. Resistance exercises increase flexibility and balance, which decrease the likelihood and severity of falls.

Performing these exercises on a Whole Body Vibration platform can increase these results and help you achieve them in less time. Any exercise that can be done on the floor can be done on a vibration platform. Whole Body Vibration aids in faster muscle growth, better flexibility, better blood circulation, reduction of sore muscles, improved balance, even healing injuries.

Many businesses have implemented or are interested in developing health promotion programs for employees. The benefits of workplace wellness include:

Improving employee health

Reducing preventable health care utilization and lowering health care costs

Enhancing work performance/ productivity

Decreased absenteeism

Improving employee satisfaction and retention

Reduce Injury and Workman’s compensation claims

The White House’s proposed 2011 budget was released, which includes plans to reduce childhood obesity rates by budgeting $1 billion to improve children’s access to healthy meals, and include $10 million in a federal employee workplace initiative to implement prototype wellness programs.

The plan includes increased federal funding for workplace wellness programs, programs for schools that address childhood obesity, education for healthcare employees, and “individual and community initiatives to help Americans make healthful choices.”

Employee wellness programs are an excellent way to help defray the rising cost of health care. In addition to cost-savings, employers who provide wellness programs report improvements to worker productivity and retention, as well as improving the working environment.

Whole Body Vibration (WBV) allows the equivalent of 60 minutes of conventional exercise to be achieved in just 10 minutes. It is so effective; three 10‐minute sessions a week are enough to make a considerable difference. Whole Body Vibration is perfect for loosening up your entire body and relieving stress. Standing on a WBV platform even for just a few minutes will supercharge all the cells in your body and give you energy to continue working.

This is why many corporations are including WBV equipment in corporate fitness centers. Because WBV is safe, fast and highly effective, it’s become a great solution for boosting employee health.

Are you hunched over a computer all day? Do you rarely take lunch breaks away from your desk? You’re probably stressed out and generally feel “tight”. WBV is perfect for loosening up your entire body and relieving pent up stress.

Vibration exercise is much more effective than conventional exercises. Workout times can be drastically shortened – you can accomplish the same results in 10 minutes what would take you 60 minutes with conventional exercise. This is true because WBV requires your body to constantly respond to the rapidly moving platform beneath you. Whole body vibration increases circulation, blood flow and oxygen intake. WBV also reduces cortisol (the stress hormone) and creates and releases endorphins. It also detoxifies the system, enhancing relaxation.

Standing on a whole body vibration platform even for just a few minutes will supercharge all the cells in your body and give you energy to continue working. This is why many corporations are including WBV equipment in corporate fitness centers. Because WBV is safe, fast and highly effective, it’s become a great solution for boosting employee health.

Beyond its trendy aspects, positive effects have been observed on strength, body balance and bone mineral density.

There are many different types of settings that you can find Whole Body Vibration (WBV). Fitness centers, senior centers, and physical therapy offices just to name a few. One of the most common places for Whole Body Vibration to be used is a Chiropractic office. The benefits of WBV compliment Chiropractic specialties tremendously. Chiropractors are known for natural treatments, not just spinal adjustments. They are able to use WBV for rehabilitation purposes and offer it as a fitness option adding to their services.

As the popularity of Whole Body Vibration grows so will the places you can find it.

We are looking for donations to help purchase the supplies, so we can load the plane with as much as possible. Family members of The Vitality Depot and a Red Cross official will personally assure that the items reach the right people for maximum effect.

The airplane will land in Cap Haitian, and from there the medical supplies will be taken by the local Rotary Club to the facilities of the Doctors without Borders and the food and blankets will go to the Red Cross in Haiti. This has all been arranged through extraordinary efforts of our Vitality Depot family.

100% of your donations will go directly to this effort and The Vitality Depot will transfer the funds on your behalf. All support staff has volunteered for this. Your support goes directly to help the Haitian people.
We expect to take off on Wednesday morning to provide immediate assistance. The Vitality Depot will front the support, but we need your assistance to fill the plane. Please help us to assist the Haiti community in this time of dire need.

I am personally asking you to assist us with this effort. Here’s how you can donate:

Call us at 866-941-8867 and pay the donation by credit card or pledge a check. If you are getting this after hours and we don’t answer, please leave a message.

Very few fitness systems available today get emphatic about lymphatic systems. While good exercise promotes a healthy lymphatic system, many systems do not focus on the fact that a healthy lymphatic system is just as important as toned muscles and healthy bones.

The lymphatic system, much like the blood vessels and arteries in your body, runs all over the body. This system is a complex one, and has three main missions. It carries away excess fluids in the body, it carries away fat and fatty acids to the circulatory system for removal, and it is the central part of what most people call “the immune system.” Obviously the lymphatic system’s health is vitally important to overall health.

The lymph system is generally stimulated by movement of the body. The reason that clusters of lymph nodes are located in the arm pits, the groin, and other constantly moving areas is for that reason. As we age we become less active, and the normal stimulation needed by lymph nodes to pump lymph fluid around the body, filter it, rejuvenate it, and attack biological intruders is not as effective. It is one of the reasons that older people are more susceptible to illness. But there is a way to deal with this challenge.

Using Whole Body Vibration stimulates the lymphatic system. It causes immune response in the lymph nodes, giving the body better defenses against illnesses. It causes the lymph system to drain more efficiently, getting trapped fats and biological intruders on their way out of the body through the circulatory systems filters. In short, the vibrations of the WBV cause dozing lymph nodes to wake up and do the work they are intended to do, especially in the aging body where lymph health is even more vital to overall health.
