Effects of Whole Body Vibration in females with Osteoarthritis of the knee

March 3rd, 2010

Osteoarthritis is a joint disease that causes the cushion layer between your bones (aka: cartilage) to wear away. It is also called degenerative joint disease.  It is not known what causes joint cartilage to wear away. But it is known that osteoarthritis is more common as you get older or if you are very overweight. Sometimes a serious knee injury can bring on arthritis after a few years.  Osteoarthritis can affect any joint in your body, and it is the most common type of arthritis.

A doctor may recommend therapies to help relieve your pain. For example:

  • Rest your knee or avoid activities that make your pain worse.
  • Put ice on your knee for 20 to 30 minutes a few times a day to reduce inflammation and ease the pain.
  • Take an over-the-counter medicine, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
  • Do physical therapy or certain exercises to help strengthen the muscles around the joint.

For physical therapy and strengthening exercises of the knee Whole Body Vibration is a great option.   A study was completed to assess the effects of WBV exercise on » Read more: Effects of Whole Body Vibration in females with Osteoarthritis of the knee

Positive Effects of Whole Body Vibration for Rehabilitation

February 24th, 2010

Physical therapy clinicians strive to choose the most effective, economical and beneficial treatment regimens for their patients.  Whole Body Vibration therapy may be the answer to these needs.

Whole Body Vibration exercises primarily rely on the involuntary stretch reflex of mechanoreceptors creating greater communication between the brain and contracting muscles. This concept is important during neuromuscular re-education because the increase in involuntary muscle response creates a jump-start effect on the muscle spindles.  The response is called a tonic vibration reflex. The reflex amplifies the neuromuscular efficiency by stimulating 100 percent of muscle spindles at the same frequency of the vibration.

Current research on WBV reveals » Read more: Positive Effects of Whole Body Vibration for Rehabilitation

Whole Body Vibration improves pain and fatigue in women with Fibromyalgia

February 2nd, 2010

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a 6 week traditional exercise program with supplementary whole-body vibration (WBV) in improving health status, physical functioning, and main symptoms of fibromyalgia (FM) in women with FM.

For this study, 36 women with Fibromyalgia were randomized into 3 treatment groups: exercise and vibration, exercise, and control.   Exercise therapy, consisting of aerobic activities, stretching, and relaxation techniques, was performed twice a week (90 min/day). Following each exercise session, the Exercise and vibration group underwent » Read more: Whole Body Vibration improves pain and fatigue in women with Fibromyalgia

Effect of Whole Body Vibration on Overweight and Obese Women

January 25th, 2010

A study was completed to determine the effect of whole body vibration on oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide production among overweight and obese women.

For this study measurements of ventilation of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and heart rate were taken using a portable gas-analysis system on 20 adult overweight women.  Exercises were performed on a vibration platform with a frequency of 35 Hz and with amplitude of 4 mm. Two dynamic exercises (squatting and calf raises) and one static exercise (standing) were performed » Read more: Effect of Whole Body Vibration on Overweight and Obese Women

Reducing the risk of bone fracture with Whole Body Vibration

January 6th, 2010

Bone fracture is among the most common and most expensive health problems in the population, particularly in postmenopausal women. The major determinants of bone fractures are falls, bone fragility, loss of balance and decrease of lower limb strength.

Physical exercise is considered as an effective strategy, frequently recommended in general practice, for the prevention and management of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Aerobics, weight bearing and resistance exercises were all effective increasing bone mass density. However, arduous bone stress induced by vigorous weight-bearing activities can increase the risk of injuries, particularly in the elderly.

Therefore, alternative strategies with a lower risk of injury » Read more: Reducing the risk of bone fracture with Whole Body Vibration

Exercise is a must, why not maximize your efforts?

September 18th, 2009

As we age, it becomes increasingly challenging to maintain our health, our bone density and our muscle mass.  Our body changes over time, and so does its needs.  But the need for exercise to maintain healthy bones and muscles does not change.

As we pass middle age into our golden years, as much as we still need it, we must be increasingly careful about how we exercise to maintain our fitness. We aren’t as flexible as we were in our youth, and our bones and connective tissues are more easily injured.  Balance can also be affected by the aging process and by medications, making accepted gym workouts more challenging than they should be.  If we find ourselves walking or moving with assistance, even more care must be taken to assure exercise is positive and of value. » Read more: Exercise is a must, why not maximize your efforts?
