Whole Body Vibration vs Fitness Training in Elderly

In: Whole Body Vibration

12 Jan 2010

A randomized controlled study on the impact of whole body vibration training versus fitness training has shown that whole body vibration is as efficient as a fitness program to increase isometric and explosive knee extension strength and muscle mass of the upper leg in older men.

These findings suggest that whole body vibration has the potential to prevent or reverse the age related loss in skeletal muscle mass.  The loss of muscle mass, muscle strength, and endurance capabilities in the elderly is summarized under the term Sarcopenia.  The loss of muscle strength can lead to the loss of an independent lifestyle and many other health concerns.  Whole body vibration has a low injury risk and can be considered preventive intervention for older people.
